| About My Sewing & Clothes written Fall of 2004 |
Sewing and the making of clothes has been a favorite thing of mine since I was eight years old. Sitting on the steps outside of my parent's apartment with my dolls, some material from old clothes, scissors, and a needle & thread I would lay the material out, put the doll on top and cut around the doll to make 2 pieces the same. I would sew the pieces together with the needle & thread to make some pathetic looking thing for my doll to wear besides the outfit she came with, but the concept worked! So that was how I started, then my parents bought me a cheap plastic toy sewing machine that I used so much I broke it. That machine sure did beat the hand sewing thing though! So when we moved to a house they bought me my first real sewing machine in a wooden desk. In high school sewing class I was the first one done with my project and sneaked to help almost everyone in the class with theirs! This love for sewing grew and so did the love for clothes and fashion.
Not necessarily the fad of the times would be my obsession, just style
in general and any style I felt that day would be fine for me, no matter
what the fads were doing! Whenever I would buy clothes for myself I would
alter them in one way or another. To this day I can still lay out fabric
and cut away at it without a pattern to make a piece of clothing to wear
or even take someone's favorite dress and make another one using their
old dress. Alterations of broken zippers are defiantly not my favorite thing but
I have done all sorts of alterations and custom clothing for people in
my own home for a business for more than 12 years. I have made wedding
dresses and prom gowns, costumes to snowmobile seat covers for customers!
